Snoring and Mandibular Advancement Splints - Information for Medical People
Mandibular advancement splints have been shown to be effective for the treatment of snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea (apnea).
Mandibular advancement splints (MAS) work by keeping a subject's airway open when asleep.
Mandibular advancement splints are also known as mandibular advancement devices. Many patients prefer to call them mandibular advancers, jaw advancers, jaw advancement splints, jaw advancement devices, anti-snoring mouthpieces, or oral appliances for the treatment of snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea.
Mandibular advancement is a simple technique for opening the airway, keeping the palate taught and stopping snoring. Mandibular advancers work, as the term implies, by advancing the mandible forward. This is often done using a malleable mouthpiece that is worn between your upper and lower teeth when sleeping.
